Creative Practice :
I originally trained in textile design, and after several successful years constructing and exhibiting my embroidered textiles – often made on a very large scale, I began to investigate the mediums of drawing, painting and print-making. I now work between the three disciplines. Recent work includes responding to my local environment -Kendal Fell –– making work based on from pigeon-keepers, allotments and sheds to landscapes.I exhibit my work professionally in a number of galleries. I studied in Edinburgh (with Scottish artist Kate Downie), investigating mono-printing and large scale drawing. I have also been developing new work which incorporates sound-recordings and making soundscapes.
Education Practice :
I have worked with all ages of children from nursery to secondary. I have worked in special school settings i.e. in summer 09 - Mowbray Special School residential arts week where we responded to the environment through working in felt and printmaking.
I work collaboratively and inclusively. I am concerned to offer age-appropriate projects, and relevant processes, but to stretch each child according to their individual needs and abilities. I believe in drawing as a fundamental key-skill as a means of recording as well as expressing. I write regularly for “Start” magazine – for teachers of art in primary settings.
I am currently involved in a year-long environmental art project with three primary schools in Kendal, as lead artist, planning, devising, managing, fundraising and carrying out workshops, all based upon Kendal Fell. This has involved trips out to different locations. We have made visits to woods, to identify and draw native British trees, and the fell to identify and draw wild-flowers. We have researched the history of the Fell. We have visited allotments in order to look at sustainability, the growing of food and recreation. From drawings and photography students developed new skills in printmaking and in making hand-made mixed-media books. We will be exploring the use of photographic screen-printing. We are also working with a writer, and the project will culminate with the creation of a poetry path for each school.
I have worked with Creative Partnerships at Barrow Island Primary, exploring the notion of identity, making a large-scale felt map of the island and embroidered “passports”. This was working across-phases. With Lancaster Girls Grammar School I was lead artist on a combined history and art textile project making a huge hanging for the school hall. I am also happy to offer specialist training sessions for teachers. Upcoming projects include working with every child and staff in a primary school to devise and create new large-scale hangings for the school hall.
