Description :

1. 'Finding a Voice' - This project involved bringing students with emotional/behavioural difficuluties together with mainstream students. They were given the opportunity to create fictional characters that were free to express any feelings or views that they wished, on any subject of their choosing. Through improvisation and structured acting and writing exercises they devised and developed monologues for these characters, which were rehearsed and eventually performed. A selction of these moving, and often hard hitting, pieces were brought together for the film, 'Finding a Voice'. 2. 'The Cowslip Bell' - This project was originally devised as a study aid for students preparing for the Shakespeare paper of the KS 3 English SAT. Year 9 students explored the KS 3 set scenes from The Tempest through improvisation and performance. They 'translated' the original text into modern English. They devised a play, in modern English, which explained the story of The Tempest. Based on the device of placing Ariel in a present day Nursing Home, they were able to include the set scenes (and others) in the original language as flashback, whilst explaing them within the context of the story as a whole. The play was rehearsed, and a professional level of set, lighting, sound and costume were added to produce a complete theatrical experience. A sequence of matinee and evening performances were held for students from other schools.

Description :

This was a TDA project for Cumbria Arts in Education working with teachers in the early stages of their careers to help them develop approaches to teaching and learning that support creativity and critical thinking. The project explored the ways in which established curriculum areas might be presented in a new way. The idea was built around the teacher's interest, and confidence, in dance. KS 1 students, through research, improvisation and acting exercises devised a dramatisation of the life of Grace Darling. The main narrative was pre-recorded to a soundtrack by the girl playing Grace Darling, and this was added to in performance. Costume, lighting and staging were added for a public performance in the village hall.
