Creative Practice :

My practice focuses very much on the making process and finding out through making. This involves elements of play as well as more traditional, structured and conceptual approaches. I use a wide range of materials and processes in my practice as I enjoy the different qualities and aesthetic properties that this opens up within the making process. A lot of my public work is large in scale in experiential in nature. I like the quality and physicality that scale brings to the work and gives to the viewer. This also enables me to make work that can be entered and experienced from within as well as viewed from without. My public work is strongly rooted in site and context. I’m interested in the link and interaction between art, architecture and environment. References to both the natural and built environments help to inform the work that I make. Notions of public/private, personal/shared and internal/external space are also important themes running through my work.

Education Practice :

I work very much on a project by project basis. This means that I can develop my approach to a project based on its specific needs. This in turn enables me to develop responses and strategies which are tailored specifically to the aims, aspirations and focus of the host organisation. Each project begins with a period of research. This helps me to get to know the project, the school and the people involved. It also helps me to identify how I can fit into the process and what I can contribute to it. As in my creative practice I look for ways to go beyond the obvious and I try to develop approaches which go further than expected. This, I find, can have the knock-on effect of raising expectations, boosting pupil’s confidence as well as helping to create a real sense of achievement for everyone involved.

Description :

Project Shed was developed out of the Millom and Haverigg Artist’s Residency. During my time in residence I was to work with and connect 3 very different sections of the local community. These were pupils from Millom Secondary School and Millom Primary School and inmates from Haverigg Prison. The project culminated in a high profile event which showcased and brought together the work that was created during the project. I worked with each group independantly to develop and make the work and at the end of the project all the sheds were exhibited in various locations through the town. (Please see image number 3)

Date Completed :

July 2005
