Creative Practice :

I am an artist that works mostly with sound. My work is wide ranging from digital to mechanical, indoors, outdoors, live art, film, radio, interactive installations, bands and events. I am a multi-instrumentalist musician (percussion, trombone, melodeon, harmonica, tuned percussion, whistles). I use broadcast standard recording equipment to produce original sound art compositions. The playback of the work can be from low tech bean-can telephones through, online sound mapping to complex multi-channel works. I enjoy collaborating and devising site specific work. I do not have a stock workshop - I respond to the needs of the client or brief.

Education Practice :

I have worked as an educator and workshop leader for over 20 years. My background in community music began with Welfare State International and I have led projects for The Sage Gateshead, More Music, Cumbria Soundwave, Youth Music and Boom Dang. Recently I have been creating interactive sound and video installations and outdoor musical instruments for Curious Minds in Lancashire. I am currently developing field recording and music production techniques for use both in and out of the classroom using interactive whiteboards.

Description :

Last year I led sessions at Morecambe Road School. It is a Community Special School. The school wanted to run an ICT project utilising the technologies available in the school. I worked with 4 classes on separate projects. I identified under-utilised resources in the school and developed whole class projects utilising this equipment. All the projects involved sound. I discovered boxes of unused Coomber headphones. I developed a system using headphones, microphones, soundcards, a laptop, Smart boards and Ableton Live Audio software. Every pupil in the class had a pair of headphones. The sessions involved the students recording, listening and editing audio. We produced soundtracks for 4 short films. The techniques worked very well and I am currently developing the techniques into a bespoke mobile ICT sound workshop.

Date Completed :

June 2010
